Top 5 Facts – Please read them carefully.

  1. 99% of COVID-19 infected people will survive and 80% =85% will recover at home without needing any medical attention. Real tragedy will hit later when many will survive without a job and money to buy food or medicines for other illnesses they have. Its a worldwide economic disaster. All govts need to provide income support to masses who will be affected.
  2. Without showing symptoms no one can infect other person and that too requires sneezing, coughing or touching. So don’t panic so much when you go out to buy essential stuff. Just maintain 3 feets distance from everyone outside and wash hands + groceries properly when you come back to home.
  3. A total LOCKDOWN is not possible as people need to buy food, key workers need to work, food shops need to open, food deliveries need to work. Lockdown And social distancing can’t stop the spread of infection, but will delay it and hence will give Govts and health care systems time to cope up with numbers of critically ill patients which can be you or your elders or health care workers or pregnant/sick people already at hospitals. So Please 🙏 stay at home, save health care systems like NHS which can save lives in hospitals.
  4. If you develop fever + new cough symptoms, self isolate for 14 days and don’t burden NHS with calls or need for tests. See Govt.uk advice – they don’t need to track the source now. You will recover on your own in 14 days.
  5. Advice at thiscommunity infectionstage in UK is pretty simple. Not infected = mask + social distancing. Infected = home isolation for 14 days. Breathing difficulties = Call Doctor or Govt Health service.

Now Details on above Facts

  1. CORONA VIRUS is another fast spreading cold/cough virus like FLU (influenza) with some similarities and differences listed here at page 2 of report at WHO Site. Some Keypoints
    1. As per WHO report above, close to 99% of COVID-19infected people will survive because data suggests that 97.5% of reported people are surviving. This mortality rate is still significantly more than what FLU can kill and flu has a vaccine too whereas no vaccine yet available for Corona (min 12 months). Note that reported people number is always going to be less than actual infected people
    2. There is more risk of serious illness and dying to Doctors, Health Workers, old people (60+) and people with chronic or serious (not mild) health conditions like lung, heart, blood pressure, diabeties. (As per WHO report above: 80% of infections are mild, 15% are severe infection requiring oxygen and 5% are critical infections, requiring ventilation.).
    3. We should still follow social distancing guidelines to avoid spreading the infection to people at more risk above but we should atleast stop panicking if someone in neighborhood is detected of corona and is isolated at home for 14 days. And we should wash hands a lot.
    4. Flue spreads faster then Corona Virus but Corona will infect more people because virus survives for 9-14 days on surfaces like door handles, hand rails etc
    5. Kids get more infected by FLU but very less infected by Corona
  2. If you or someone is not showing the symptoms (fever, a new cough) then you or that person will not infect anyone (see WHO report mentioned above, its very unlikely) and that too requires that person to sneeze, cough or you to touch him/her or anything around him.. Hence stop PANICKING when you are out and standing in Queues. Just maintain your 1 mtr 3 feet distance from anyone looking normal and not coughing and 2 mtrs 6 feet distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Thats all you need as social distancing.  Seen those  journalist on TV with mic on a long stick nowdays and postman delivering stuff while maintaining distance from you? if they are safe, then means you are safe too by practicing 1mtr/2 mtr recommendation above.
  3. A total LOCKDOWN is not possible at city/town level and will not completely stop infection spreading. Total lockdown meaning everyone stays at home for more than a day . Any form of lockdown is effective in slowing down the spread and hence giving time to health care system, workers, hospital – which is what Govts across the world want – slow growth in infections (e.g. UK Govt strategy).  See, even at town level, key workers like doctors, nurses, police, postman, ambulance drivers, security guards, full time home based carers and associated people will need to go out and do their jobs or more people wil start dying of other reasons. Also supplying food to a whole city/town for 2-4 weeks is not possible hence people will have to be given permission to go out and buy rations and other medical supplies.
    1. https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/ – this awesome graphic simulator explains the purpose and outcomes of social distancing/isolation
    2. Note: A lockdown or home isolation strategy will only be effective if done for more than 30 days. As an exampled, suppose on Day 1 everyone in your house was not infected and 1 person got the infection. She/he won’t show symptoms in most cases till 5-7 days. From 6th day it will take him/her 14 days to recover.  So he/she will need total of 21days to become a non-infecting safe person and to go out. But many of them, despite all precautions, will end up infecting another person in household between Day 5 and Day 12. So second person in household will also need 21 days now. Total min days we need 12+21 = 33 to consider a household of 2 adults (assuming kids don’t get infected easily) to be safe.
  4. Please note, if you have developed any cold/corona like symptoms like FEVER+Coughing then whether its CORONA or not, you just isolate yourself at home for 14 days. If you have isolated yourself at home then no need to get Corona tested and its not necessary to report your sickness to NHS UK as per UK GOVT Advice here https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-the-public  Hence, No need to panic for 99% of us. Only worry if you have developed breathing difficulties, then call NHS UK if in UK or call Govt health service in your area then.
  5. Advice at this “community infection” stage (no need to track source now) in UK is pretty simple
    1. if you are not infected, wear mask, wash hands and maintain social distance and avoid crowded (3+ is crowd) places.
    2. If you are infected, wear mask and self isolate at home for 14 days.
    3. If you develop serious illness and breathing difficulties, then only call Doctor or Govt heath service but don’t go directly to any doctor or hospital. Call first.
