A UK Expert’s Advice: Whether you’re someone who’s been placed in compulsory quarantine or have chosen to self-isolate due to Covid-19 it can seem a bleak prospect. This is why it’s important to put measures in place which not only keep you physically safe but also mentally positive so that you can emerge from it hale, hearty and positively energised.

So lets start with:

Physical Needs
-Make sure your accommodation is well ventilated and you have adequate daylight coming through.
-Make sure you have adequate food, water and hygiene products, yes that includes toilet rolls! But the clue is in the word “adequate”. At this stage there is no need in the UK for stockpiling and panic buying. So concentrate rather on setting up with efficient home delivery services and family and friends willing to leave provisions at your door.
-if you live alone then its much easier but if you live with others, avoid spreading Covid-19 by keeping to your room, everyone keeping up with washing hands, wiping down areas and washing clothes and bedding with antibacterial products.
-Eat well. This means have the nutrition known to fight off illness and increase the body’s defence system but also have your-possibly-not-so-nutritious but are your ’feel-good’ treats, I don’t know anyone who does a Netflix binge with a bowl of lettuce leaves.
-Exercise within your space for at least an hour a day, any exercise that suits you, it can be just dancing around to your favourite tunes. If you can’t manage an hour break it down into 20minute segments but its important to keep moving.
-Sleep as much as possible because sleep is one of the best known restorative processes known.
-Have a hot drink every hour to keep flushing the bacteria out, plain water is the best but if you don’t like plain water have whatever you fancy but just keep drinking. And through the night sip as soon as you feel your mouth and throat go dry because this is where it builds up from.

Financial Needs
-If you’re in employment ensure your employer is aware of your situation and why you’re at home(unless your employer has sent you home).
-Obtain any necessary medical certificates needed by contacting your GP either by phone or online, to protect your income. If you’re on benefits, do the same with the Benefits agency.
If you’re self employed, although the potential loss of income is an understandable worry, resist the urge to soldier on because you will be putting yourself and others at risk. Instead contact all your networks, suppliers, creditors as well as your own bank, building society, landlord to let them know your situation and buy yourself some time. They will respect you more for doing the right thing.
-In all cases contact service providers of essential services like water, gas, electricity, wifi, and let them know if there’s likely to be delay in payments because the last thing you want is for any of those to get disconnected.

Family,Partners and Friends
-There’s nothing worse than feeling ill and being unable to get a hug, cuddle embrace from loved ones. If you’re able to stick to all the guidelines and have the correct protective clothing this may be possible but why would you risk contaminating your loved ones? So the best advice is to refrain for now so that you have a bright future ahead, full of years of embraces.
-However maintain contact with all your family and friends, use all the free messaging, calls and group chat facilities to have 1-1 chats, celebrate family birthdays and other special occasions online in group video calls because it’s important to remain involved.
If you don’t have wifi, or don’t use online services, use your regular landline to maintain communication with those you love because this is what will sustain you emotionally through the quarantine period.
Similarly if you have people in your life who are in quarantine make sure you maintain contact with them and keep them feeling integrated, loved and missed in your family and friendship circles.

Mental Health
The cumulative effect of your Covid-19 health worries, worrying about your income and the ability to keep a roof and pay your bills, plus the lack of social and physical interaction has the potential to put a huge strain on your mental well being, so its important to sustain it.
I’ve heard people say on a very positive note things like “Hooray! I finally get to use my Netflix subscription!”
There are others who are using the time to start learning skills like the art of meditation and yoga which has the bonus of ticking both the mental health and physical exercise boxes.
You could perhaps start an online course or read all those books or magazines you’d been meaning to read but never had the time to or start a new hobby – knitting anybody?
The bottom line is we need to keep ourselves mentally topped-up, particularly during enforced isolation so whether its fun activities, notching up CPD hours or personal and spiritual development – keep using all the resources available to you to stay mentally engaged.

At this point we don’t know how far the Covid-19 fever is going to spread but fortunately we live in an age where we have all the tech, resources and ability to avoid/contain any cases of “cabin fever”.

See you all on the other side people!
