Apple and Google are jointly developing “contact tracing” technology to alert people if they have recently come into contact with others found to be infected with coronavirus.

What is Contact Tracing?
- contact tracing aims to identify and alert people who have come into contact with a person infected with coronavirus
- Smartphones can be used to quickly and automatically determine whether somebody has been in contact with another person.

How Contact Tracing will actually work on NHSX App?
- People will download the app to protect them and others around them.
- When people come within 10mtrs of each other, their phones will exchange a unique ID type number with each other automatically,using bluetooth technology, without picking up the phone and doing anything.
- This unique id will be stored with google and apple and is just number. It can’t be used to identify you. It can only be used to send your phone an alert notification. It will be linked to your phone, not you.
- When someone suspects himself or herself of infection (self diagnose or via govt telephone helpline) , they will inform in the App. This will then send a “yellow” alert to everyone whom they had come close to in last 14 days and their phones automatically exchanged unique ids via bluetooth.
- When someone is tested confirmed of “corona virus”, they will inform in the App. This will then send a “RED” alert to everyone whom they had come close to in last 14 days and their phones automatically exchanged unique ids via bluetooth.
- Those people will be requested to self-isolate at home and this will then stop/slow down the spead of a pandemic like corona virus.
- One benefit of using Apple and Google’s API is that the NHS app will not have to employ workarounds to keep monitoring the bluetooth signals even when the app is not active. Google and Apple will built this service into their phone’s operating systems.
If implemented properly, this technology will help enable close the lockdowns early and ease border restrictions/
